Most tip calculators do one thing: bill × percentage = tip. That's the easy 10% of the problem. The parts that actually cause confusion at the table are the parts most calculators skip — should the tip be calculated before or after tax, how do you split fairly when everyone ordered something different, and how do you avoid a per-person total ending in an odd number of cents that nobody has exact change for.

This tool handles all three properly. The tip basis toggle lets you calculate the tip on the subtotal alone or on the subtotal plus tax — a real, non-trivial difference (on a $45 bill with $3.60 tax, a 20% tip comes to $9.00 on the subtotal alone versus $9.72 on subtotal plus tax) that most calculators quietly decide for you without telling you which one they picked.

Fair Split solves the classic uneven-order problem: instead of dividing the bill evenly regardless of what each person ordered, enter each person's own subtotal and the tool distributes tax and tip proportionally to what they actually spent, using the Largest Remainder Method — a standard, real apportionment algorithm — so the per-person shares always sum to exactly the full bill, to the cent, with no rounding drift.
