Step by step

How it works

  1. 1Pick a mode (Time or Words), a duration or word count, and a content type — plain words, sentences, or (once unlocked) a Forge Drill targeted at your weak keys.
  2. 2Click into the text box and start typing — the test starts on your first keystroke, no separate start button.
  3. 3Watch your combo multiplier, live WPM, and your position against the ghost update as you type.
  4. 4Review your results — WPM, accuracy, consistency, score, and any XP or badges earned — then try again or jump straight into a Forge Drill.
Why OTL

Why use Typing Speed Trainer

Race yourself, not a number

Your best run for each exact test configuration is saved as a ghost you race head-to-head next time, giving you a concrete target instead of an abstract score.

Combo scoring rewards consistency

A rhythm-game-style combo multiplier rewards sustained accuracy, not just raw speed — one slip resets your streak, just like a real typing mistake should cost you.

Practice actually targets your weak spots

Every keystroke's accuracy is tracked per key across your full history, powering a heatmap and a Forge Drill mode built from the letters that actually trip you up.

XP, levels, streaks, and badges

A local leveling system with a daily streak counter and twelve unlockable badges gives practice a sense of progress beyond a single session's numbers.

Nothing ever leaves your browser

Every run, ghost recording, and per-key stat is stored only in your browser's local storage — there's no account and nothing is ever uploaded.

Free, unlimited, no account

Practice as many rounds as you want, with full history and progression saved on your device — no signup, no daily cap.

Real-world use

Who uses Typing Speed Trainer

Building typing speed for work

Track WPM and accuracy improvement over repeated sessions for a job or course that expects fast, accurate typing.

Warming up before a typing-heavy task

Run a quick 30-second or 60-second test to warm up your hands before a long writing or data-entry session.

Fixing a specific weak key or two

Use the weak-key heatmap to identify exactly which letters cost you the most accuracy, then drill them directly with a Forge Drill.

Friendly competition against your past self

Try to beat your own saved personal-best ghost for a given test length as a simple, repeatable improvement goal.

Building a daily typing habit

Use the streak counter and level progression as a light nudge to practice a little most days rather than in occasional long sessions.

Practicing punctuation and number rows

Turn on the punctuation and numbers options to practice the keys a plain-word test skips entirely.

Deep dive

About Typing Speed Trainer

Most typing tests measure the same two numbers — words per minute and accuracy — and stop there. That's a reasonable baseline, but it treats every run in isolation: today's 62 WPM tells you nothing about whether you're actually improving unless you're manually tracking your own history across sessions. It also treats every keystroke equally, when in practice most typists have a small handful of specific letters or combinations that account for a disproportionate share of their errors.

This tool's ghost race addresses the first problem directly. Rather than typing against an abstract number, you type against a replay of your own best run for the exact same test configuration — same mode, same duration or word count, same content type and settings — visualized as a small figure racing along a track next to a ghost icon. Beating your own ghost is a concrete, visible goal in a way that "beat 62 WPM" isn't. If you're brand new to a configuration and have no ghost yet, you race a steady synthetic pace bot instead, so the track is never empty.

The combo and score system borrows a mechanic from rhythm games rather than from other typing tests: consecutive correct keystrokes build a combo counter, and every ten-keystroke tier bumps a score multiplier, up to a cap. A single mistake resets the combo to zero. This rewards sustained accuracy over raw speed in a way a plain WPM number doesn't — two typists with identical final WPM can have very different scores depending on how many long, clean streaks they managed to string together versus how choppy their run was.

The weak-key tracking runs quietly in the background of every test you complete, tallying attempts and errors per character across your full history — not just one run. Once it has enough data on a handful of keys, a Forge Drill option unlocks: practice text generated with those specific characters woven in more often than plain random text would produce, so a five-minute drill actually targets the two or three letters actually costing you accuracy, instead of hoping they come up by chance in ordinary text.

Pro tips

Pro tips

  • Your ghost is saved per exact test configuration — mode, duration or word count, content type, and punctuation/number settings all have to match for a ghost to carry over.
  • A single error resets your combo to zero, so slowing down very slightly to stay accurate often beats typing as fast as possible and breaking your streak repeatedly.
  • The Forge Drill option only appears once you've completed enough tests for the tool to identify keys you're actually struggling with — a few normal tests unlock it.
  • Consistency score reflects how steady your WPM was throughout the run, not just your final average — a run with a slow start and a fast finish scores lower than a steady one at the same average speed.
  • Time mode keeps extending the text as you approach the end of the buffer, so you never have to wait or slow down near a word boundary.
  • Your run history, streak, XP, and badges all persist across sessions in your browser — clearing your browser's site data will reset them.

Privacy & security

Everything you type into a test — and how well you actually type it — stays yours; none of it needs to leave your browser for the game to work.

Every keystroke is scored locally in your browser tab — nothing is transmitted anywhere, not even for analytics.

No account, login, or email address is required to use any part of this tool.

Your run history, ghost recordings, XP, and badges are all stored only in your browser's local storage.

Works exactly the same whether you're practicing casually or tracking serious long-term improvement.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my typing data uploaded anywhere?

No. Every keystroke, run result, and ghost recording is stored only in your browser's local storage — nothing is ever sent to a server.

How is WPM calculated?

Raw WPM counts all keystrokes divided by 5, per minute. Net WPM subtracts incorrect keystrokes first, so it reflects your effective typing speed after accounting for mistakes.

What is the ghost I'm racing?

Either your own saved personal-best run for this exact test configuration, replayed step by step, or — if you have no ghost yet for that configuration — a steady synthetic pace bot at a speed you choose.

How does the combo multiplier work?

Every correct keystroke in a row builds your combo. Every ten-keystroke tier increases a score multiplier, up to a 3.0x cap, and a single mistake resets the combo back to zero.

What is a Forge Drill?

A practice text generated using the specific letters you've historically made the most errors on, based on your full typing history, so a short drill targets your actual weak spots.

Do I need an account to save my progress?

No. Your level, XP, streak, badges, and run history are all saved automatically in your browser's local storage — no signup required.

Stuck?

Troubleshooting

My ghost disappeared and I'm racing a pace bot again

Ghosts are saved per exact test configuration — mode, duration or word count, content type, and punctuation/number settings all have to match. Changing any of those switches to a different (possibly empty) ghost slot.

The Forge Drill option is greyed out

It unlocks once the tool has enough data on keys you're actually struggling with. Complete a few normal Words or Sentences tests first and it will become available.

My combo keeps resetting even though I feel like I'm typing correctly

Any mismatch between the expected character and what you typed — including a wrong case or a missed punctuation mark when those options are on — counts as an error and resets your combo.

My XP, streak, or badges disappeared

All progress is stored in your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser's site data, using a different browser or device, or browsing in a private/incognito window will not carry it over.
