Deep dive

About XML Sitemap Generator

An XML sitemap is a structured list of a website's pages that helps search engines discover and crawl content more efficiently, especially on larger sites or sites with pages that aren't well linked internally. The format itself is simple XML, but hand-writing it correctly — with valid absolute URLs, properly escaped special characters, and correctly nested tags — gets tedious past a handful of pages.

This tool handles the tedious part: paste a list of URLs, one per line, and it builds a valid <url> entry for each one, automatically skipping any line that isn't a valid absolute URL (starting with http:// or https://) rather than silently including something broken. Each generated entry can then optionally be given a last-modified date, a change frequency, and a priority value.

Those three optional fields are hints, not guarantees — search engines use them as one input among many when deciding how often to recrawl a page, not as binding instructions. Still, setting a recent lastmod date on frequently updated pages and a higher priority on your most important pages is a reasonable, low-effort signal to include.

The output is valid, properly escaped XML matching the sitemaps.org schema that search engines and webmaster tools expect, ready to copy directly or download as a sitemap.xml file to upload to your site's root. Everything happens instantly in your browser — there's no limit on how many URLs you can process.

Pro tips

Pro tips

  • changefreq and priority are hints, not commands — search engines can and do ignore them if they conflict with what they observe about the page.
  • Every URL in a sitemap should be the canonical, absolute version (including https://) — relative paths or non-canonical URLs are invalid.
  • A sitemap should only be split across multiple files once it exceeds 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed, per the sitemap protocol's limits.
  • After uploading sitemap.xml to your site's root, submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools so it's actively used, not just present.
  • Reference your sitemap's URL in your robots.txt file with a "Sitemap:" directive so crawlers can discover it automatically.

Privacy & security

Turning a list of page URLs into a sitemap shouldn't require handing that list to a third-party server.

The entire sitemap is generated locally using plain XML string building — nothing is transmitted anywhere.

No account, email, or login required.

Your URL list is never stored or logged.

The same privacy standard applies whether you're generating a sitemap for 5 pages or 5,000.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, completely free with no limits, and no account needed.

How is my data handled?

The sitemap is built entirely in your browser — your URL list is never sent to a server.

What's a good priority value?

Priority is relative (0.0 to 1.0) and only meaningful within your own sitemap — a common approach is 1.0 for the homepage, 0.8 for major sections, and 0.5 for everything else.

Does a sitemap guarantee my pages get indexed?

No — a sitemap helps search engines discover pages more efficiently, but indexing still depends on many other factors like content quality and crawl budget.

Can I include images or videos in this sitemap?

This tool generates a standard page sitemap; image and video sitemap extensions use additional XML tags not covered here.

Troubleshooting

Some of my URLs were skipped

Only valid absolute URLs (starting with http:// or https://) are included — check the skipped count and make sure each line is a complete URL, not a relative path.

Where do I upload the generated file?

Upload sitemap.xml to your site's root directory so it's reachable at https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, then submit that URL in Google Search Console.

Do I need to set lastmod, changefreq, and priority?

No — all three are optional. A sitemap with just <loc> entries is valid; the extra fields are optional hints for crawlers.

My site already generates a sitemap automatically — why use this?

This is most useful for sites without a built-in sitemap generator, or when you need fine-grained per-page control an automatic generator doesn't offer.
